Petit deftly handles “processed acoustics/field recordings/foundsounds + electronics + turntables & glass manipulations + percussions + synths/piano + balloons” while his seventeen piece personnel contribute all kinds of cello, electric harp, vibraphone, tibetan bowls, flutes, gongs and “prepaired” piano to the dense and intricately woven fabric of thirteen hallucinatory scenes linked by the title - a French word referring to “musical instruments whose sound comes from the vibrations of one or several strings”. Reinhold Friedl of Zeitkratzer Ensemble’s prepaired piano makes a tangible appearance on opener ‘Gli Occhi Freddi Della Vendetta’, merged with a wash of billowing guitar feedback and Raphaelle Rinaudo’s electric harp, and it’s just one highlight among many across this phantasmic album. The general rule of shorter, more concise pieces makes for a rapidly changing soundscape: at their longest - 6 minutes of 4th whorled jazz abstraction on ‘Many-Minds in Many-Worlds’, or evoking the effect of multiple dimensions colliding with Alter Ego’s Manuel Zurria and Strings Of Consciousness’ Raphaele Rinaudo appearance on ‘Crepuscule’ - to the shorter, intense poignance of Philippe Petit’s solo piece ‘Merlin’s Music Box (An Hommage To Janacek)’ and the sweetly queered dissonance of ‘The Modern Dance For The Advanced In Age’. Ultimately there’s an ambition and scope at play here which will reward many repeated listens in altered states of consciousness to best reflect its psychedelic potential.
